About Me
A reverence for wood and its unique variations is the simple foundation to my approach to woodturning. I endeavor to reveal and enhance as much of the beauty and natural elements in the wood as possible. I make a best guess at the figure within the log and or burl and go from there. When designing the form, I carefully select and prepare the blanks from the tree as I strive to incorporate some natural edge, some sapwood, and the heartwood. It is easier to turn a hollow form vessel in end grain, but you lose all of this character. I often use stone inlay to feature natural voids and cracks or to offer some splash of complimentary color. I endeavor to generate clean curves to grace the natural lines in the grain. The process begins with a chainsaw and ends with finishing surfaces sanded to 600 grit or beyond. I sand, and I sand, and I sand.
I see my work as a collaboration. The wood has some unique features and I have some preconceived ideas of what I want to make. Sometimes the character and quality of the wood will drive the process and other times I will decide this wood is particularly well suited to some particular project or design.
Woodturning presents a wide range of project possibilities from crafting small gifts or household utility items to large or complex designs integrating different materials and concepts.
For me it is about the joy of making.
I hope you enjoy having one of my turnings as much as I have enjoyed creating it.
